rush:

What is Rushing?
Rushing is the attendance of events sponsored by the chapter by students interested in joining the fraternity. It lasts for 2 weeks at the beginning of each fall semester.

Will I get a lot of chances to express my interest at events?
Yes. We design our Rush event schedule to work with a variety of needs. We also hold events on various days of the week so that no matter when you have studio, you can always make it to some of the events.

What is the purpose of attending Rush events?
Attending events with the Brothers allows you to learn a little about the fraternity, get to know the Brothers, and express your interest in becoming a member.

What efforts do I have to make to attend these events?
All you have to do is clear your schedule for a couple hours. Everyone needs a break from studio, and this is your perfect opportunity.

How do I find out about these events?
This website has all Rush events posted. You can also find posters advertising our schedule of events and smaller sheets with specific details for events posted around the UTSOA.

Why must I interview?
The interview is the final, and most necessary, step in the rush process, so make sure you sign up. The interview is a perfect chance for us to get to know you better and make sure that you and the fraternity are a good match.

What is the next step after rushing?
After you have attending Rush events, interviewing, and expressing an enthusiastic interest in becoming a member of the fraternity, you may receive a bid, which is a formal offer to become a pledge.

pledging

What is pledging?
After attending Rush events and accepting a bid (invitation) you become a pledge. Pledging is the process by which an interested individual becomes a member of the fraternity.

How do I pledge?
Come to our Rush events during the first few weeks of the fall semester. From there if you receive a bid, you may become a pledge.

How much does it cost?
Over the course of the semester pledge dues are $150. This is to prepare you for the $30/month as a brother. This is far less costly than almost all social fraternities and sororities.

Where do dues go?
Half goes to the national fraternity. The rest goes to the social, philanthropic, and professional events that the fraternity hosts.

How long does pledging last?
Usually nine weeks, give or take a week depending on the semester. It begins in early September and continues through the entire semester. The load does ease, however, at the end of the semester to accommodate the increased studio commitment.

What does pledging involve?
Weekly meetings will take place. Here, you'll learn about the fraternity, as well as participate in educational and group-building activities to forge strong relationships with the other pledges and the members of the fraternity. You interact with brothers, plan a formal, and participate in various pledge activities.

How much commitment does this all take?
The amount of effort required can be compared to a relatively simple class, which meets once per week and requires a reasonable amount of studying. Most of the activities involved are constructed to be fun, bring you closer as a group of pledges, and generate a sense of personal ownership in the well-being of the fraternity. The fraternity expects all pledges to take the process seriously, but as a group of hard working students in architecture and the allied arts, we always understand that everyone has other commitments as well.

Does Alpha Rho Chi have an initiation?
Yes. While professional fraternities are markedly different than most social fraternities, there are some common elements. There are a certain number of traditions that have developed as a part of the heritage of the organization. Initiation is one of them. Alpha Rho Chi is a brotherhood with history, traditions, and alumni. These are some of the reasons why Alpha Rho Chi is much more than "just a club".
